Teaching
Our courses cover the whole design chain of modern mechanical engineering: from industrial technical drawing and machine drawing at the BSc level, up to integrated CAD/CAE design and the design of automatic machines and robots at the MSc level. All courses follow a strong project-based learning approach and make extensive use of industrial CAD/CAE software.

Fundamentals of technical product documentation: orthographic and axonometric projections, views and sections, dimensioning, ISO tolerances, surface roughness, threaded fasteners and permanent connections, following UNI/ISO standards. The course includes hands-on 2D CAD laboratory sessions and a computer-graphics exam in which students produce the complete technical drawing of a mechanical component.

Functional design and representation of machine elements and assemblies: geometric dimensioning and tolerancing, fits and couplings, standard components, and the transition from 2D drafting to feature-based 3D CAD modeling. Students learn to read, interpret and produce professional assembly and detail drawings of real industrial machines.

Design methods for servo-actuated automatic machines: machine architectures (mono- and multi-actuator), servo-system and gearbox sizing, motion design, vacuum gripping systems and integrated CAD/CAE laboratory experiences. The exam includes the discussion of a professional project report on an industrially relevant case study.

English-taught course on the mechatronic design of automatic machinery and industrial robots: robotic cell layout, kinematic architectures, actuation and transmission selection, energy-efficient motion planning and multibody simulation, with project-based learning on physics-based virtual prototypes of robotic workcells.

Project-based learning
Every course is built around a realistic design project, developed individually or in teams and discussed as a professional project report.
Industrial software
Laboratory sessions use the same parametric CAD, FEA and multibody simulation tools adopted in industry, from 2D drafting to full virtual prototypes.
Industrially relevant case studies
Assignments and thesis topics stem from our research and from collaborations with industrial partners, bridging classroom and real engineering practice.
Thesis projects & PhD opportunities
We continuously offer BSc and MSc thesis projects on compliant mechanisms, robotic grippers, virtual prototyping and robotics simulation, often in collaboration with industrial partners.
